February 25, 2026 – Terry Lane Scarborough, our firm’s founding and named partner, passed away peacefully this morning at home. Mr. Scarborough was 79 years young. As in life and in his career, Terry valiantly battled cancer for several years. Our firm will greatly miss his presence, wisdom, wit and leadership. We send our sincerest condolences and support to Terry’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
Mr. Scarborough joined forces with the Honorable Kent R. Hance to form Hance Scarborough in 1994. The formation brought together two mighty legal forces of political and regulatory expertise with the highest level of experienced state and federal trial practice. Terry led the Litigation Section of Hance Scarborough from 1994 until he took a break a few years ago. Mr. Hance had contacted his close friend federal Judge James Nowlin in 1994, inquiring about prominent litigators that had practiced in Judge Nowlin’s court. Mr. Hance tells the story that “Judge Nowlin told me that the best litigator in Austin was ‘Terry Scarborough.’ That was more than good enough for me. I was fortunate and honored to have Terry as my law partner, my colleague, and most importantly my friend. I will miss his counsel, his smile and ever-present bow tie. God bless him and his family. We will miss you.”
