United States Marine Corps (Reserve) Major Aaron F. Reitz, a Presidentially-appointed, Senate-confirmed Assistant Attorney General who previously served under Senator Ted Cruz and Attorney General Ken Paxton, has joined the law firm of Hance Scarborough. Mr. Reitz brings a wealth of legal experience to assist the firm’s government, administrative, business, and litigation clients.
Mr. Reitz’s most recent post was in Washington, D.C. as head of the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Legal Policy (OLP). At OLP, Aaron developed and implemented DOJ’s major policy initiatives and served as the chief legal policy advisor to the U.S. Attorney General. Mr. Reitz also served as Chief Regulatory Officer for the Department, ensuring DOJ’s administrative law affairs complied with President Trump’s regulatory agenda. Lastly, Aaron coordinated with the White House Counsel’s Office to identify, vet, and prepare judicial nominees.
Prior to serving at the Justice Department, Mr. Reitz worked for Senator Ted Cruz as his Chief of Staff, overseeing domestic policy, legislative, communications, and administrative teams, as well as Commerce, Judiciary, and Foreign Relations Committee staffs. Before then, Mr. Reitz worked for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton as his Deputy for Legal Strategy, where he led the Agency’s most consequential and politically-sensitive litigation, appeals, investigations, and legal initiatives.
“In every chapter of my legal career—both throughout Texas and in Washington—I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside the talented attorneys at Hance Scarborough,” said Mr. Reitz. “I’m honored to join the firm and contribute to its work on important legal, regulatory, and policy matters at both the state and federal levels.”
The firm’s Founding Partner, the Honorable Kent R. Hance, welcomed Mr. Reitz to the firm. “Aaron brings knowledge, relationships, and guidance to the firm of both federal and state legal and political areas of practice. Aaron has proudly represented both Texas and the United States as a senior executive attorney and in top policy-making roles. Our firm is honored to have Aaron—a man who proudly serves our country as a Marine Corps officer. We are excited to welcome him to our law firm,” said Chancellor Hance.
Mr. Reitz received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and law degree from the University of Texas. As an officer in the Marine Corps, Mr. Reitz was deployed to the northern Helmand Province of Afghanistan. He continues his military career as a Major in the Reserve. In law school, Aaron was President of the Texas Federalist Society and Editor in Chief of the Texas Review of Law & Politics. After law school, he worked for a large international law firm in Houston and clerked on the Texas Supreme Court for now-Chief Justice Jimmy Blacklock. He is married to his high school sweetheart Meredith, and they are blessed with four young children. The Reitzes are active members of Saint Mary Cathedral in downtown Austin.
